What information does Kirchner’s US Ocean Import data set contain?

Kirchner’s US Import records are collected from Bill of Ladings, of containers that enter the US by one of its ocean freight harbours.

Booking No: The unique identifier assigned to the shipping order or reservation made with the shipping company.

B/L No: Bill of Lading Number; a unique identifier for the document that details the shipment of goods.

Shipper: The name of the individual or company sending the goods.

Shipper Address: The address of the shipper.

Consignee: The name of the individual or company receiving the goods.

Consignee Address: The address of the consignee.

TEU: Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit; a measure of cargo capacity used to describe container shipping capacity. This column represents the number of standard 20-foot containers.

FEU: Forty-foot Equivalent Unit; another measure of cargo capacity, representing the number of 40-foot containers.

Trunk VVD: Typically stands for “Trunk Vessel Voyage Document”; it might refer to the specific voyage of the trunk vessel.

Vessel Name: The name of the ship carrying the cargo.

POR: Port of Receipt; the port where the goods are received for shipping.

POL(Booking): Port of Loading; the port where the goods are loaded onto the ship as per the booking.

POD(Booking): Port of Discharge; the port where the goods are unloaded from the ship as per the booking.

DEL: Delivery; might refer to the destination or delivery specifics.

WGT(KGS): Weight in Kilograms; the total weight of the cargo.

MEA(CBM): Measurement in Cubic Meters; the total volume of the cargo.

PKG: Package; the number of individual packages in the shipment.

PKG Unit: Unit of measurement for the packages, such as cartons, boxes, or pallets.

REP CMDT: Reported Commodity; the type of goods being shipped.

CMDT Code: Commodity Code; a code used to classify the type of goods.

CMDT: Commodity Description; a description of the type of goods.

Customs Description: Description of the goods for customs purposes.

Freight Term: The terms under which the freight charges are paid, such as FOB (Free on Board) or CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight).

Forward Name: The name of the freight forwarder handling the shipment.

Notify Name: The name of the person or company to be notified about the shipment.

Notify Address: The address of the notify party.

Also Notify Name: An additional contact person or company to be notified.

Export Name: The name of the exporter.

ORG EQ OFC: Origin Equipment Office; the office responsible for the equipment at the origin port.

DEL EQ OFC: Delivery Equipment Office; the office responsible for the equipment at the destination port.

Booking Contact Phone Number: Phone number of the contact person for the booking.

Booking Contact E-Mail: Email address of the contact person for the booking.

SI Contact Phone Number: Phone number of the contact person for the Shipping Instructions.

SI Contact E-Mail: Email address of the contact person for the Shipping Instructions.

Sailing DT: Sailing Date; the date the vessel departs from the port.

REV.WEEK: Review Week; possibly the week during which the shipment or records are reviewed.

Activity Teu: Activity TEU; the number of TEUs involved in the specific shipment activity.

Activity Feu: Activity FEU; the number of FEUs involved in the specific shipment activity.

Mty P/up CY: Empty Pickup Container Yard; the location where empty containers are picked up.

At Kirchner we have collected these records for a majority of all US ocean imports from 2014 until today. In combination these data sets allow researchers to see product trends and industry changes.

But it also allows micro economic analysis of individual companies – which some of our customers, like banks have used to do background checks on customers, investors to determine future stock growth, buyers to find suppliers, and companies to check on their competitors actual production quantities.
